 NISA

bullet point  Nisa-Today's is the UK's largest buying group for independent retail and wholesale companies. Its commercial objective is to negotiate the lowest cost price of products and provide the most efficient supply chain for its member companies, by strategically using their combined turnover powerbase.

bullet point The 'Nisa' organisation was formed in 1977 as the 'Northern Independent Supermarkets Association' within the retail industry. There are now in excess of 475 members operating over 5,000 stores making up the Nisa retail business. Included are some of the largest independent retailers such as Budgens, Costcutter, Jacksons & Bells Stores. Additionally, Nisa-Today's is rapidly developing its own store package that will allow participating members to benefit from a nationally-recognised image.

bullet point Furthermore, in 1987, following the merger of the Target and NIWA (Northern Independent Wholesale Association) groups, the 'Today's Group' was formally launched. Now the 'Today's Group' has over 330 wholesale companies with more than 375 depots throughout the UK.

bullet point 2003 saw the launch of a new corporate image that is being extended across all areas of the business, including the fascia programme. All new retailer fascias will carry the Nisa-Today's logo within the design. Three clear options are available for Nisa members - Nisa Metro, for high street/city centre sites, Nisa Local for 'chimney pot' locations and Nisa Extra for larger convenience stores. The Today's Group will also have a number of new retailer fascia options available for its customers soon.

bullet point The Group operates rapidly expanding distribution operations with ambient & licensed products being handled at 2 units totalling 450,000 sq.ft. at Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and chilled & frozen foods from a modern, dual-temperature depot at Stoke-on-Trent, with 165,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space.

bullet point These three warehouses form the backbone of the Nisa Today's Central Distribution Service (CDS) package - a total solution, providing trading benefits like reduced stockholding, ease of delivery and simplified accounting to the group's membership.

bullet point Nisa-Today's also provides its members with a comprehensive support package, including a wide own label range, store development and consumer marketing campaigns. The Nisa promotional leaflet campaign is currently distributed to 4.5 million consumers every three weeks. The leaflets are personalised to over 1,000 stores throughout the UK and have been a major factor in the resurgence of the independent sector, against the growing domination of the multiple supermarkets. Similarly in the wholesale sector, The Today's Group offers its retailer customers a consumer mailout package within its V.I.T. (Very Important Trader) Club, which has proved tremendously successful for smaller stores.

bullet point In 2002, 'Nisa-Today's' achieved all its major trading objectives and also managed to record its best ever-financial results. It's this kind of progress that's seen 'Nisa-Today's' go from strength to strength, with group turnover increasing to a current figure in excess of £15 billion.

bullet point Providing effective competition to the continually expanding multiple sector is still a constant source of inspiration to everyone at 'Nisa-Today's'.
